If you have checked all utilities and gone through all the worst-case scenarios, and still facing the problem of slow running device, then possibly it is the system and compressed memory disk that creates the problem. The disk usage may be too high that other programs are not able to run appropriately. System and compressed memory disks have everything to do with the OS and memory of computer. It maintains the compression of files and folders and checks for an appropriate data flow and storage on RAM.

It normally consumes little space on the CPU. However, if the disk is corrupted or damaged, it will suck on the space making other programs run slow. As a result, you would experience reduced computer speed and performance, ultimately leading to system crash and data loss.

Here are the topics that would be discussed in detail. As mentioned above, being a utility to deal with the system and compressed memory of the device, this system, and compressed memory disk is responsible for the compression of files and folders for storing them on the device. It also deals with RAM management. This portrays the underlying issues that cause this unusual consumption.

Here are two of the reasons that may end up in this issue:. In both cases, your device will run at a reduced speed in a way making it difficult for other programs to work on the device.

As a result, you may confront freeze or crashed systems leading to data loss. Wondershare Recoverit is a very professional data recovery software that can help you retrieve lost data. More importantly, it is user-friendly, you can easily regain lost data from a hard drive in three simple steps.

Here are the steps:. Step 1: Start the process by downloading and then installing the antivirus software. Step 2: Once installed, launch the software and undergo a full scan of your device to check all the vital threats imposed on your computer. Step 3: As all the threats are cleared, now restart your device and check the system and compressed memory high disk usage. If the disk usage gets back to normal, it means a virus or malware was causing the issue.

If you are using windows 10, then by default, the value for paging file size is set to automatic. Hence, setting this value back to automatic would resolve the issue. Step 1: In the main menu of Windows 10, select the option of settings, and in the settings window, search for the option of performance.

Step 2: In the next window, click the option to Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. Step 3: In the performance window, select the option of advanced followed by clicking on the change button present under virtual memory. Step 4: In the virtual memory window, check the box present beside automatically manage paging file size for all drives and click ok to proceed.

Another method that could be employed is to decrease the space consumption by system and memory disk via disabling the superfetch service. It is the utility that decreases the boot time required to load the programs with the operating system. You can disable it via run command or with a command prompt. Here are the steps to follow:.

Once launched, type services. Step 4: In the superfetch services, click stop. A warning message would appear i. Superfetch to be disabled. Click ok to complete the action. Command prompt can also help to resolve the issue of system and compressed memory high disk usage. Step 1: In the main menu of Windows 10, look for the command prompt, right-click on it to open.

Launch the command prompt with administrative privilege. Click ok to proceed. Step 2: In the next command prompt, type net. Press enter to continue. In case if you want to check the disk, you can type chkdsk. Optimizing the visual effects for best performances can also work in favor to settle the problem. Here is how you can do it. Step 4: In the next window, click the option of settings under the section of the performance.

Step 5: Now in the section of visual effects, check to adjust for best performance. Select apply and click ok to continue. If not, the issue is resolved. Sometimes, the issue is not due to any virus or malware attack rather it is due to RAM failure. In this regard, you can check by replacing the sticks of RAM one by one. Once replaced, boot your device.

If there are multiple sticks of the RAM, it is only one of the sticks causing the problem. Hence, next time when your device is running slow, you must know, it is because of the system and memory disk creating the problem.

It is the disk that deals with the system and memory management and performs the function of file and folder compression to be saved on the device. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Your computer is simply underpowered. Since you also have a hard disk drive and not a solid-state drive, you are easily observing the effects of memory swapping , also called paging.

Since you don’t have enough RAM for the stuff you’re doing, the operating system is using the hard drive to help out. Since you don’t mention the model, I’m sure the rest of the computer isn’t that new as well. You will need to upgrade this computer. Google Chrome will be open with less than 20 tabs, and a file with photos, or a file with documents will be open, and thats it.

Im not doing anything else. I just recently tried to back it up and that took forever because it kept failing but finally got everything backed up to Norton cloud I was not able to get the back up to run using my external hard drive.

I actually bought an external SSD thinking that would help and it still kept failing to back up. Drivers started failing as well. This machine is a light gaming computer and should just buzz.

It is only 2 years old BTW. I might post my issues in its own post, but thought I would give details here since it is a related issue and because this post was just submitted yesterday so its new. Wondering if DavidLandry3 is having any of the other problems. Same problem here. Came with Win10 so don’t tell me I shouldn’t be running it on this system. Bought it a few years ago brand new. Worked fine for a few months, until one particular update went on that slowed it down to a crawl possibly that security fix that disabled the processor look-ahead buffer?

Limped along like this for a year, then did a full, clean re-install not a factory reset , as recommended in these support pages. Was a bit better for a couple of months, then degraded again. I’ve adjusted settings to remove as many background tasks and services as possible, simplified the display settings and so on.

Every so often maybe every 10 days or so , the system becomes unusable for days at a time. I have to run Task Manager constantly to see what’s going on, but often even that doesn’t respond. I have to just go away and leave it for an hour or more and hope that I can get control back so I can do some work with it. When it’s really stuck, it’s usually sysmain or just system at the top. It seems to be updating constantly too – every day, as far as I can tell.

I’d investigate more but to be honest I have other work I need to do, and my system is preventing me from doing that work! This is the worst version of Windows I’ve ever used apart from a short time on Win8 – that was truly awful! I have no argument with Windows checking for updates frequently, but it should be able to do it without hogging all the resources and stopping me from doing work.

Sometimes I’ve had to hold down the power button and force a shutdown. When that happens, I can expect a minute startup, watching the dancing dots, then another minutes watching more dancing dots and “Welcome” after logging in. Now, what I can’t understand is this: I have another – much older – laptop that exhibits none of these problems with Win It’s also a Dell an E This was a Centrino, Vista-era machine, upgraded to Win10 just as a test, and it flies!

As far as I know it’s on the same release of Win10 as the problem laptop, yet it works fine. In fact, it runs faster than a similar E I have that runs Ubuntu. I’ve updated the Dell drivers, of course. I’ve also noticed that on the problem machine the Bitlocker service is running, even though Settings tells me that Bitlocker is not enabled.

I tried a Registry edit that should have disabled the service, but when I last checked it was running again. It’s possible that the latest update has just re-enabled it. I’ve soldiered on like this for about a year. The last straw came yesterday when dialogue boxes suddenly started appearing with no text. That’s prevented me from doing any work MS Word is affected, for instance. The irony is that I’m a former IT support professional, so I normally have few problems fixing Windows issues.

I’ve even successfully got other people’s Win10 machines running faster – just not my own! I’m typing this on the E It’s been like it for well over an hour. There’s no noise from the HDD though. I can’t believe that it’s really being accessed. I’m now stuck for ideas. I can’t see another clean install helping. Does anyone have any ideas for fixing this? I’m just checking AnaMedina3’s link to a suggested fix sorry, I must have missed it as I scrolled past earlier. I haven’t heard of that particular cause before, so it’s certainly worth looking into.

I can’t test it yet anyway: my Inspiron still won’t let me do anything. I’m back in! It’s only taken about three hours. It didn’t last long. Became unresponsive again after a few minutes. Not long enough to even check the AHCI driver. However, after another wait, I had another window of opportunity and managed to get the process completed although a system restore point took a lot longer to create than usual.

On restart it began a check and fix of C:, so maybe there is a hardware issue with the HDD after all. Previous manual disk checks all came up clean. Right, I seem to have solved the problem! Or maybe I haven’t, and the problem has just abated, as it sometimes seems to do – only to pop up again a few days later. I tried the MSI solution – no improvement after a restart. No change after a restart. Then I did something I thought I’d already gone through: I checked for any software that might be causing a problem, uninstalling anything I no longer needed and restarting after two or three uninstalls restarts took so long, I couldn’t face doing it after every uninstall.

So I have to conclude that it was one of these that was the root cause. Not the software itself, as I hadn’t used either for some time. But maybe one of them was causing multiple svchosts to spawn which explains why System was often top of the HDD usage list. I then – as a test – reinstalled Filelocator Pro. The disk usage immediately jumped up again, and I thought “Gotcha! I’ve removed it again though. I’ll do more tests to get to the bottom of this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that these are red herrings – that the problem just subsided as it has done so often in the past.

The only difference is that it’s not freezing on me now. Windows Updates have been paused for 7 days, but sure enough, those pesky update processes are still floating up to the top of the Task Manager listing. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.

Windows 10 users who experience issues such as slow response time may look into their Task Manager for guidance. Task Manager provides you with a wealth of information regarding the processes that are currently running on your machine. You need to take some corrective action. Here are 10 methods you can use to attempt to resolve the problem of high disk usage on your Windows 10 system.

Some may take longer than usual due to the stress and increased usage that your hard drive is already under. You know from experience that restarting your machine can often resolve all kinds of issues. While taking this route may not help you find out the underlying reason for the problem, if it goes away, that may be sufficient for you.

Installing the latest updates can often resolve mysterious problems with your Windows 10 system. This may improve the overall performance of your system including that of your hard drive. A known bug in Windows 8 and 10 can cause a search loop that can be the cause of your high disk usage.

To temporarily stop the Windows Search facility and see if it improves your disk issue, open an admin prompt and enter the command : net. This will stop Windows search from running until the next time Windows is restarted. Your computer may be infected with malware that is causing your disk usage to spike.

If you have antivirus software running in the background it should have caught the issue. Nothing is perfect though, so force your antivirus package to scan your hard drive for a potential infection. This could be a time-consuming process since your disk is already experiencing high usage but might be necessary to identify and remove malicious software.

Another Windows 10 feature that can cause problems is the Windows Superfetch service. You can disable this service temporarily in a similar fashion to Windows search with the command: net. Use this procedure:. See if this improves your disk usage. If so, you may want to consider changing antivirus packages. Virtual memory treats your disk as if it is RAM and uses it to swap out temporary files when it runs out of actual RAM.

Errors in the pagefile. The remedy to this problem is to reset your virtual memory settings. A check disk can show you if there are any physical problems with your hard drive.

Run check disk and note its results. Some users have reported that making these changes to your Google Chrome and Skype settings can have a beneficial effect on your disk usage. One last thing to try is to disable any automatic defrag processes that are running as they may be causing you problems.

Kevin B.

Optimizing the visual effects for best performances can also work in favor to settle the problem. Here is how you can do it. It’s been like it for well over an hour. There’s no noise from the HDD though. I can’t believe that it’s really being accessed. I’m now stuck for ideas. I can’t see another clean install helping. Does anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Hence, next time when your device is running slow, you must know, it is because of the system and memory disk creating the problem. It is the disk that deals with the system and memory management and performs the function of file and folder compression to be saved on the device.

This article explains the issue in detail along with some built-in quick fix mechanisms to solve the problem i. Download Win Download Mac. Theo Lucia. Or is it fixable? I have an i3 M 2. Recover Seagate data easily. Drive damaged? Recover data Recover Toshiba drive data.

A slow-running computer often bogs because Windows commits significant system resources into disk read and write operations. However, some commands and system settings may vary. There are several potential causes for high disk usage in Windows 10, but most come down to the same basic idea: Too many things are running for the computer to handle.

One common cause is swapping or paging. Swapping occurs when a computer runs out of physical memory RAM and needs more space to store information about the running processes and applications.

It uses a file on the hard drive called swapfile. As Windows works with that information, it constantly reads and writes to swapfile. You also might find that applications that search through or use many files at once access the hard drive at an alarming rate behind the scenes. Many applications can behave this way, including antivirus software and some utilities that are installed with Windows. Most of the time, the fixes for high disk usage come down to finding the process that uses the hard drive frequently and stopping it.

Below are a few of the most common solutions. Disable Windows telemetry. Windows 10 collects data about the way you use it in the background. It’s been the topic of controversy for privacy reasons, and it’s a common cause of high disk usage. Disabling the service responsible can help give the hard drive a rest. Disable Windows search indexing. Windows keeps track of your files and where files are located on the drive, so you can easily search for the file you need.

Sometimes, the process Windows uses to create an index of where those files are can slow down the drive. Disable search indexing to decrease stress on the drive. Disable SuperFetch. SuperFetch can use a lot of system resources, including writing to the drive frequently. Disable it to stop the process from running behind the scenes and writing to the drive.

Disable Windows Tips. As you use Windows, an integrated app running in the background offers notifications with advice about the operating system. While this is the least likely problem causing the disk usage utilization error, it is one more app running in the background that can cause problems.

Turn off Windows Tips and see if it improves your system performance. Give Skype write permissions. If you run Skype for Desktop on any Windows version before Windows 10, Skype could be causing the disk usage problem. If Skype doesn’t have permission to write data to one of its subfolders in Program Files x86 , it continues to write and ramps up hard drive usage. To change permissions, right-click Skype. Finally, to close, select OK.

Disable prefetch in Chrome. A few features in Chrome speed up your browsing experience. One of those services is a prediction service in Chrome that analyzes what site you’re likely to visit and preloads those pages in the background.

However, this service puts an extra load on your computer and the hard drive. In Firefox, disable prefetching by visiting about:config in the address bar and setting the network. Fix the AHCI driver. To fix it, do the following as described below. Under the Driver tab, choose Driver Details.

Here, look for the driver storahci. If you see it, then your PC could be susceptible to this known bug. If you discovered that the storahci. Go to Details in Device Manager and choose the Device instance path from the drop-down menu. From here, copy the value listed and paste it into a text editor like Notepad. Expand the folder of the value you saved in a text editor. Editing inside the registry opens the door to inadvertent, significant configuration errors. Changing the wrong values may destabilize your computer.

Add more RAM. If disk usage is high because your computer doesn’t have enough physical memory RAM , the best solution is to add more. RAM is one of the easiest upgrades on any PC, and it’s relatively inexpensive. Plus, your computer will be able to multitask more efficiently as a result. Disable automatic Windows Updates. Another common cause of high disk utilization sources from Windows Updates taking place at random times, automatically. Stop Windows from updating at random, and you’ll stop the drive from maxing out.

If you disable automatic Windows Updates, run manual updates frequently. This process ensures you receive important security updates that keep your computer safe from viruses and malware. Scan for malware.

If all else fails, there’s a chance your computer could have a virus or malware. The best thing to do at this point is to make sure you have good antivirus software and run a full system scan. A full scan can take a long time, but it finds and removes any malicious software running on the system and spiking the disk usage.
