This keeps the total punch control that keeps the game from being a button masher, and your punches flow well.

Where this game is much better than the previous three installments is the improvement in the defensive game. Before you could block and guess which direction your opponent is going to attack all day long and parry their shots for some easy counters.

Here the parry is gone, and it’s replaced by a similar counter strike opportunity where the game temporarily slows down for a second for a photo counter. What’s different is that you can’t just hold block the whole time because your effectiveness in blocking decreases while you are holding the right trigger to block, so you have to use it wisely or risk taking damage.

Want to weave and counter? Great, it’s the same method, but this time your stamina doesn’t get replenished when you are holding down the left trigger, so you can’t just hold the trigger down and wait for your opponent. It makes for some really good strategy that keeps the game from being too gimmicky. I like that it doesn’t take 6 knock downs to completely take out the opponent anymore.
