You could, for example, record using a Mod Wheel but change the type to Expression 11 or Cutoff To get a better view of the recorded data, or edit elements of it, try opening the Piano Roll editor. For precision work, the ability to draw the nodes in without having to enter the Piano Roll is a godsend! The result is a more musical transition. With that said, this may not always be the case, since you might be decreasing the volume at a point that originally made it more dynamic. I find this gives me a chance to respond and alter the dynamics in a way I see fit. In today’s tip we’ll explore some of Logic’s powerful, yet underused Automation features. Logic features a very sophisticated Track-Based Automation system that allows you to fully automate or change over time settings on virtually all channel strips, effects and instruments.

This can bring extra life to your mixes. Let’s take a look at some of these Automation Power-User tips. Logic has a dedicated Automation Curve Tool. In all honesty I never use it anymore.

Once you master the key command to create your own curves, there really is no need to switch between the Pointer tool and the Automation Curve Tool! Hold down the Shift and Control keys and position the Pointer tool over the line between the nodes.

So, you’ve taken a long time to painstakingly draw in some complex volume automation for example and now you want to quickly adjust the overall parameter levels of multiple nodes Hold down the Shift key and drag a selection area over all the nodes you wish to adjust.

Drag within the highlighted area but not on a node or line to invert the automation value. Try it out to see the difference! In the picture below I used it as an easy way to reverse the Pan settings on the track. Often you may find the automation you create for one parameter would either sound better when applied to another parameter or you’d like to copy it to another parameter In this example, I’ve drawn volume automation on this track, but I’d like to copy it to pan automation on the same track.

Choose Pan or the parameter you wish to copy existing automation data to and then release the Option Key. A Dialogue Box gives you two options. If you wish to keep the existing automation data as well as copy it to your selected parameter, choose Copy and Convert. It’s easy to copy track automation data to another section of the same track.

 
 

1 – How to Mix With Automation — Sage Audio

 

Click the audio region to create Flex Markers and pull them around, creating high and low speed sections in the process. Then try varying the Grain Size on the left-hand side to make your beat loop sound like it’s being attacked by grains of sand! Rather than painstakingly boosting low velocities and curtailing high ones, let the Velocity Processor MIDI effect do the hard work for you.

Logic Pro lets you create automation either for individual regions or entire tracks. For example, if you want the same filter movement to repeat for every bar of a synth sequence, select Region Automation. On the other hand, if you want the synth to, say, fade in and out over a longer period of time, that curve would need to be drawn in Track Automation mode.

If you want the depth of mixing control offered by a live drum recording session when working with acoustic drum samples, try selecting a Producer Kit. With these, a close mic channel is created for every drum, along with overhead, room and leakage channels. Fine Tune, Pitch Drift, Vibrato amount and even per note Volume can all be adjusted here, depending on which corner of the note you drag. This turns the part into a regular sequence, with individual hits now represented as MIDI notes.

We can now easily edit the drum pattern. Step 3: We convert the MIDI region to audio using Bounce In Place, then select the last two hits, muting the rest, before adding a slow-down effect at the end.

We mute the corresponding section of the MIDI. However, beware that there is a bug with this in Logic v7. To create two nodes around a part of a region, hold down the Shift and Alt keys while dragging over the area. To select a node, click and hold on it — a little info window will appear giving you details about the node.

Select a line by clicking and holding on the line. To select a group of nodes, hold down the Shift key and drag around them. You must do this within the boundary of a region, otherwise you’ll select the region itself. You can then move the whole selection by dragging the lines or the nodes within the selection. If you’d like to select all automation from the nearest node to the Song’s end, hold down the Alt key and click on the node.

Double-clicking a node while holding down Alt selects all automation on a track. The Automation tool can operate in two different modes: Curve or Select. You can select the mode from the pull-down menu below the Arrange window’s Toolbox. Selecting all the nodes within a given region is as simple as clicking on the region itself. Non-contiguous selections can be made by holding down the Shift key and dragging over each area. Just click and drag single nodes to move them, and the same goes for single automation lines.

To move a selection of nodes either horizontally in other words forwards or backwards in time or vertically in other words incrementing or decrementing the data values , click-hold and drag a line or node. In this mode, dragging a line will result in a curve.

Depending on where you drag the line, the curve will be either ‘smile’ shapes or ‘S’ shaped. You can do this with the Pointer tool by holding down the Alt and Control keys while dragging. Holding down the Apple key and dragging the volume automation slider scales the entire track’s volume data proportionally.

To scale selected automation data up and down increment or decrement proportionally, drag somewhere other than on a line or node. To do this to a whole track’s visible data, hold down the Apple key and drag the level slider to the right of the track list up or down. With some automation data selected, drag the selection while holding the Alt key to create a copy. You can delete a single node with a short click, or a selection of nodes using the backspace key — but check no objects are selected as well!

To delete all the automation data in a track, hold down the Shift and Alt keys and double-click the track. With a vocal track I start by removing any extraneous noises in between the actual singing lines. First make the vocal track’s automation visible in the Arrange window — see ‘Displaying Track Automation’ box for details, and bring up the Volume automation, checking that the automation mode is set to Read.

You’ll see the volume automation line appear. The easiest way to draw automation curves around the vocal phrases is to drag a box around each of them while holding down the Shift, Control, and Alt keys simultaneously — on releasing the mouse, four automation nodes will be created.

The first thing to do with compiled vocal takes is to remove any extraneous rubbish between takes. Repeat this for all the vocal phrases and then drag the lines between the phrases down to create volume curves around each of them.

Now you zoom in on the track so that you can edit the automation data in more detail with the mouse. You can change the feel of a vocal recording by lowering or completely removing the vocalist’s breathing — especially if you’re using a compressor plug-in on the voice. Breaths at the starts of phrases can be dealt with while removing other noises as described above — just move the start curves of the automation ‘islands’ until the breath’s gone.

Next, breath noises can be lowered to counteract the effects of any compression used. If you have a breath within a phrase, you’ll probably want to work in a slightly different way.

Use the Shift-Control-Alt-drag technique as described above to generate nodes. Now drag down the line between the nodes. You’ll probably find that removing the breath within a phrase completely will sound unnatural, so you may just want to reduce the level a little, as in Screen 4. Move Automation with Region. Recording, deleting, or moving any Region will not affect any Automation Curve. However, in some cases, when you move a Region to a different position in your song, you might want to have the automation that you created in that l ocation also move with the Region.

This option will include automation data that occurs right after the Region that might be important for the Region, i. You can set this preference in multiple places:. Move Region without Automation. Potential Problem : If you look closely at the automation data, then you would realize that the copied Region would NOT sound exactly like the original Region.

Although you copied the automation with the Region, the data got messed up. Logic added a Control Point at the left border repeating the value of the previous Control Point at that position. If you have a Control Point at the left and right border of the Region, then the automation inside the Region is not effected by the automation data outside the Region.
