Our company has purchased the product key card licenses for Office Home and Business since they come at a substantial cost savings over the CD version. I need to set up a bunch of new computers so I want to create an image to cut the deployment time. I obtained the Office I would like to include Office in my image. Ideally, I would install Office on the machine I would capture the image from but leave it un-activated.

Then, as I deployed each image I could activate them with different product key cards. The problem is that the installer requires the key before the installation even starts, so I don’t know how to get an un-activated Office installed on the machine that will be imaged. Is there a way I can install Office Home and Business first and then activate it later with a product key card? Download and install the trial version of office then image the PC. When you have an image on a new machine open office and it will ask you whether you want to use the trial version or buy a version.

Click on buy and version and it will allow you to enter your product key. I deploy images using wds and this works for us. Job done. Merryworks is an IT service provider. Granted, I haven’t tried it myself, but it works for system builders, why wouldn’t it work the same for you? Im pretty sure you can only do unattended installs if you bought the Volume Licensed Pro version, with the pro version you can do the setup.

When the image boots on the new computer for the first time when you open office it will prompt for a new key. Note: Make sure when you install office before you image to un-check the box to active the product On the screen that you type in the product key.

That way you don’t blow up the license. Would I be able to sign up for this, or is this limited to certain types of companies? This is a great suggestion- I’m going to try this today.

I’ll post about whether or not I get it to work. It certainly does appear that you have to sign up as a MS Partner for this download. I purchased the version of this through CDW years ago, but I can’t confirm that they were supposed to sell it to me. If you were to use the trial on your image instead of the preinstall kit, I would be curious to know what happens after the 60 days are up for your trial. It might work for the first couple of months only. But then again, maybe it will just automatically ask for a key after the trial is over.

It cannot be moved to another computer. You might be able to get away with buying 1 full copy with media of Home an Business. Then following my previous instructions for removing the Registration Key from the Registry. And then when you boot into the imaged computer for the first time and open office type in the key for the product key card. My company bought a few key cards to begin with then we started to buy the full blown home and business with the media because we were in the middle of upgrading computers so if we installed office then waited a few months and got around to installing windows 7 from XP then the key card would be dead and we would have to buy another one.

It is more worth your money if you do a lot of moving around to just buy the full copy so that your allowed to reactivate it several times. I think it’s 10 or 30 times, not positive. I believe if you don’t put it in, it continues as a trial. Update: at the suggestion of darrend and Merryworks, I tried obtaining an Office Home and Business trial key, and used it to install Office on my image template machine. This allowed me to get Office into the image along with all of its Windows updates. I then deployed the image to a new computer, and when I opened Office I was given the option to enter a purchased key.
